Sweater Quilts - Sandie Lush

Sandie Lush has a great reputation for making quilts fun, and her sweater quilts are no exception.

With their terrific combination of wonderful work and great concept, you are left asking if you are looking at a quilt or a variation of a sweater each time you study one of her pieces. And this, of course, is what makes them really memorable. Couple this with Sandie's wonderful eye for colour and you go from one side of the gallery to the other and come out beaming. They really do make you smile.

If you enjoy Sandie's work, then you know what you are in for. Anyone who enjoys superb quilting and wants some stimulating ideas can do no better than come and see her work.

This is how Sandie herself described her inspiration for this collection.

Janet Bolton

Artist Statement

My early awareness and appreciation of cloth, due to growing up in Lancashire when the cotton industry was still there led me, I believe, to compose my images with fabric rather than with paint.

With an idea in mind, and working directly with selected pieces of fabric, I cut, place and re-arrange the different elements allowing the composition to develop until satisfied with the placement of each piece. This I prefer to working out ideas in a different medium as it allows for a wonderful directness and freedom.

Folk Art Comes to the Welsh Quilt Centre

Following the enthusiastic media reports on last year’s exhibition of Kaffe Fassett’s quilts, this year sees a quite different display at the Welsh Quilt Centre in Lampeter. Its 2014 exhibition - “Early to Bed” celebrates Folk Art and “Make-do and Mend” in the work of the rural quilters of 19th century Wales. Those Welsh quilters still have the power to inspire textile artists in our own day.  This exhibition brings the connection up to date by juxtaposing these early Welsh quilts with the work of textile artist Janet Bolton.  It is designed by Gwenllian Ashley and opens at the Welsh Quilt Centre, Lampeter, West Wales, on Friday March 7th running through until Saturday November 1st.

Please note: this exhibition is now closed

Panorama of the Kaffe Fassett exhibition

Setting up the exhibition
In announcing the Kaffe Fassett exhibition, we wrote how proud we were to be hosting Kaffe's and Brandon's work.

We wanted to give a flavour of the exhibition to those of you still wanting to come, and those of you who live on the other side of the world. We thought we would let our visitors to date speak first. Here are just some of the quotes from the visitor's book:

"Amazing use of colour and patterns complementing the older quilts perfectly."

"Wow , wonderfully curated. The contrast between the subtle plain beauty of the Welsh quilts and Kaffes really worked."

"Very beautiful, like being wrapped up in vibrant colours. I go out singing!"

"Excellent presentation of quilts and an overwhelming feeling of colour and pattern"

"Sublime juxtaposition of rigour and hedonism"

Sadly Closed November 2013

Jen Jones on Antiques TV

Jen Jones sitting outside the shop in PontbrenduSet in her shop in Llaynbydder, Jen Jones recently recorded a programme with Antiques TV where she explained how her interest in quilts developed into a passion. She has bought and sold many hundreds of Welsh quilts and Welsh blankets while quietly assembling a collection she believes to be truly representative of the spectrum of the whole of Welsh quilting.

Jen has written for and featured in numerous books and magazines and is frequently asked to talk about Welsh quilts on quilting and interior design programmes on television.

Jen wants to make this colourful and artistic part of Welsh culture accessible to everyone. In the video, she explains the history of these highly collectable items to Antiques TV.
