An exploration of Visual language
Integral to her own creative practice Helen Duffee has worked collaboratively with pupils from local schools to produce new work for this exhibition.
"The engagement with children's work has allowed me to extend the process of intervention into that which is found - to respond to what is already material and to re-contextualise familiar imagery from within our domestic landscape"
The new ARTiculate exhibition at The Quilt Centre was introduced by Ysgol Y Dderi pupils with a presentation about the artworks on display.
The exhibition includes paintings of Legendary Pokemon reinventing the story of Strata Florida and Meloetta’s magical melodies, and the beautifully illustrated ‘Llyfr Gwyrddlas Y Dderi’, full of ancient proverbs from the ‘White Book of Rhydderch’. There is a film of the heroic ‘Alarch Anhygoel’ aka ‘Superswan’ and the dramatic rescue at Falcondale Lake re-told with animation models.
More traditional work inspired by Byzantine icons depicts ‘Nike’ the Greek Goddess of Victory and ‘Brenin’ the King of Daffodils and our very own Dewi Sant.
There is a strong environmental theme underlying the show with the school’s digital artwork featuring butterflies and wildflower meadows and of course recycled materials have been made use of with imaginative effect, by pupils from both Ysgol Y Dderi and Ysgol Bro Pedr.
The exhibition is free and open until June 3rd. The Quilt Centre is open Tuesday – Saturday from 11.00am – 4.30pm
