Ruth Packham's exhibition, Felt Places is inspired by the landscape of Ceredigion. She has photographed the scenery that is all around her and, using wool as her drawing material, needle felted the results on to cotton cloth. Each image has a minimal amount of visual information leaving the viewers' eye to fill in the gaps.
Ruth describes her work as follows:
Drawing with wool fibre in this way is, to me, like sketching. The marks are made by pushing wool fibre through the fabric and so have an air of impermanence about them, they are not sewn but just loosely bonded together.
The wool fibre used is all sourced from the Cambrian Mountains and the needle felted buildings are all based on buildings in Ceredigion.
The exhibition runs from July 5th to August 13th 2016
About Ruth Packham
I was selected as a maker in the Cambrian Mountain design challenge in 2015.
Artists/designers and makers worldwide were asked to send a proposal for a project to be made using Cambrian Mountain wool. My proposal was to needle felt a Welsh village. Each of the chosen makers were given either wool fibre, yarn or cloth made from the Cambrian Mountain wool for their project. I had wool fibre which then I had to dye suitable 'village' colours.
I took lots of photographs for the project and worked from these to create each building. The main issue I had was knowing when to stop; when the village was complete!
I had to have a Ty Bach and a farm and a chapel and a shop/pub and stone bridge.....
The whole project was launched at Nanteos |Mansion where the work was first shown in June in the presence of HRH Prince Charles. Since then it has been to numerous venues ending up in the National Woollen Museum in Drefach Felindre
